Synaptek Unveils New Class of Text Input Technology for the Pocket PC

Word-Web technology is the next step in the evolution of text entry for pen-centric computing.

Mississauga, Ontario, -- April 15, 2003 -- Synaptek Software today announced the immediate availability of TAPLESS™ Gen1.0 for the Pocket PC. TAPLESS breaks new ground by delivering patent pending Word-Web™ accelerated text entry technology. The TAPLESS word-browsing environment dramatically accelerates text input on the Pocket PC while simultaneously reducing manual skill requirements.

The TAPLESS Word-Browser solves a critical blocking issue for pen-based computing -- the need for an effective text entry model. "The key design goal of TAPLESS was to reduce the workload of text entry while keeping the user focused on composition and using language effectively," said Kevin Willows, Marketing Director for Synaptek. "By integrating Word-Web technology with adaptive word prediction in a seamless and intuitive word-browsing environment, TAPLESS brings unprecedented productivity to the Pocket PC platform."

Word-Web Technology

TAPLESS Word-Web technology operates on the principle of successive approximation, allowing users to simply browse to any word or phrase within a Word-Web dictionary. Word-Webs are structured such that any prefix of a given word can be used to browse to the word. As a result users can enter multiple characters with each pen stroke.

Adaptive Prediction

Word prediction is fused into TAPLESS allowing predicted words to be used transparently in the word browsing process. The prediction engine tracks personal usage patterns, constantly updating the Word-Web in real time to optimize performance.

Enhanced Productivity

The user can move fluidly between the word-browser and either a keyboard or handwriting recognition panel, eliminating editing for novel words. The browsing environment also greatly reduces manual skill requirements, using only simple taps to select word links. At the same time, advanced users are empowered with gesturing capabilities for fast punctuation.

Comprehensive Dictionaries

Developed by Synaptek Research, structured compression technology is one of the enabling technologies for Word-Webs. On the Pocket PC platform memory is a valuable commodity. The two Word-Web dictionaries shipped with TAPLESS pack over 30,000 words into less than 160 kilobytes or over 130,000 words into less than 440 kilobytes of memory respectively. Expandable in real-time and fully maintainable by the user, Word-Web dictionaries have no practical limitation on size or content due the unprecedented capabilities of structured compression.

Skinned Interface

Forty skins ship with TAPLESS allowing users to work the way they know best. Users may select from any of 4 different virtual keyboard layouts in any of 8 color variations or they may opt for Synaptek's Picasso™ Neural-Net based input panels that provide Graffiti* emulation.

Pricing and Availability

TAPLESS Gen1.0 is available immediately for Pocket PC 2002 based Pocket PC's and can be obtained directly from Synaptek Software or any of its authorized resellers. Pricing is $29.95 U.S. for the Premium Edition or $19.95 for the Basic Edition.
